Istanbul has long been regarded as a gateway to Europe from the east and, as Donal MacIntyre reports, this remains the case when it comes to the movement of heroin shipments. An estimated four fifths of the drugs imported into Britain flow through the Turkish city and into western Europe via the so-called 'Balkan Route'. MacIntyre meets the dealers, visits the factories where heroin is produced and also joins the Turkish police as they try to monitor the country's borders.
